How Physical Therapy Can Help Resolve Your Knee Pain

Imagine struggling to play your favorite sport, spend time with your kids, or simply walk your dog because of nagging knee pain. It’s incredibly frustrating, isn’t it?

Knee discomfort is a relatively common ailment ranging from a dull ache to a sharp, debilitating pain. However, in some cases, it can dramatically affect mobility and quality of life.

Fortunately, the team at Priority Physical Therapy offers several options for addressing, managing, and resolving knee pain. That way, you can find the relief you need to get back to the activities you love.

Targeting Your Knee Pain Right At The Source

We don’t want to just mask your knee pain symptoms. Instead, we want to address the underlying cause of your discomfort for long-term relief and improved function.

That’s why our physical therapists will always begin with a comprehensive assessment. We’ll evaluate your mobility, strength, walking patterns, and more. Our goal is to identify the specific factors contributing to your knee pain so we can develop the right treatment plan for your needs.

Common Knee Injuries or Conditions We See at Our Clinic

Osteoarthritis

This degenerative joint disease causes the breakdown of cartilage in the knee, leading to pain, stiffness, and swelling. Risk factors include age, obesity, previous knee injuries, and family history.

Patellofemoral Pain Syndrome

This refers to pain around the kneecap, often caused by overuse, muscle imbalances, or poor tracking of the kneecap itself. This condition is more common in young athletes, women, and people with flat feet or weak thigh muscles.

IT Band Syndrome

The IT band is a thick band of tissue that runs along the outside of the thigh. If irritated or inflamed, it can cause pain on the outer side of the knee and is common in runners and cyclists.

Meniscus Tears

The meniscus is a ring of cartilage that acts as a shock absorber in the knee. A tear in the meniscus can cause pain and limited movement. Sudden twisting movements, sports injuries, and advanced age are common risk factors.

Sprains

Sprains occur when the ligaments that stabilize the knee joint are stretched or torn. They’re common sports injuries and can result from quick pivoting movements or falls.

Personalized Care

Understanding the condition behind your knee pain is an important step toward choosing the right treatment and helping you return to your everyday activities.

When Knee Pain Is More Than Just The Knee

One crucial thing about knee pain is that it doesn’t necessarily stem from an issue with the knee itself. Sometimes, knee pain doesn’t stem from an injury or osteoarthritis but from dysfunction in your lower body mechanics.

Your knee depends on the function of the hip, ankle, and foot to operate smoothly. When these areas fall out of balance, stress is transferred to the knee. For example:

Weak hip muscles can allow the thigh to rotate inward, increasing strain on your knee’s soft tissues.

A stiff ankle can limit forward movement, shifting the load to the knee during activities like walking, squatting, or climbing stairs.

Flat feet can force the knee into unnatural positions, leading to irritation over time.

Muscular imbalances can pull joints out of alignment, forcing the knee to absorb excess stress.

How Priority Physical Therapy Can Help Resolve Your Knee Pain

5 Tips for a Healthy Halloween

Halloween is all about costumes, candy, spooky decorations, and plenty of fun—but that doesn’t mean your health has to disappear into a haunted house! With a little planning, you can enjoy all the tricks and treats of the season while keeping your body fueled, active, and feeling its best. Here are five simple tips for a healthier Halloween.

Family enjoying Halloween together
1

Eat Before the Candy

Heading out for trick-or-treating or a Halloween party? Have a balanced meal or snack first. Filling up on protein, fruits, vegetables, and whole grains can help keep you from arriving at the candy bowl too hungry.

2

Enjoy Candy in Moderation

You don’t have to ban candy to have a healthy Halloween! Pick a few favorites, enjoy them slowly, and remember that you can always save the rest for another day. Halloween is about enjoying yourself—not winning a competition to see who can eat the most mini chocolate bars.

3

Turn Trick-or-Treating Into Exercise

All that walking from house to house can add up to plenty of physical activity. Take the long way around the neighborhood, walk instead of drive when possible, and enjoy the extra movement as part of the evening’s fun.

4

Choose Comfortable Shoes

That amazing costume won’t be so amazing if your feet are screaming by the end of the night. Wear comfortable, supportive shoes that fit well, especially if you’ll be walking for an hour or more. Your feet will thank you when the trick-or-treating is over.

5

Stay Safe After Dark

Halloween festivities often continue after the sun goes down, so be extra careful when walking around the neighborhood. Carry a flashlight or use reflective accessories, stick to sidewalks when available, and watch for uneven pavement, steps, and other tripping hazards.

Miracle Red Juice

Enjoy a refreshing glass of Miracle Red Juice packed with vibrant beets, carrots, apples, celery, citrus, and ginger! This nutrient-rich blend is a delicious way to add more fruits and vegetables to your day.

Freshly prepared Miracle Red Juice made with beets, carrots, apples, celery, citrus, and ginger

Ingredients

  • 2 large beets
  • 4 long carrots
  • 2 apples
  • 6 celery stalks
  • 2 limes or lemons
  • 2 inches of ginger

Directions

  1. Prepare beets, carrots, apples, celery, limes (or lemons) and ginger by chopping into smaller pieces before placing into a juicer.
  2. As the skin of a beet is packed with antioxidants and nutrients, it is recommended to leave the skin on the beet. Beet skin and lemon peel (if using) have strong flavors, so you could also prepare half with skin and half peeled to adjust to the flavor, or simply peel all if preferred.
  3. Apples can be any color or variety.
  4. Do not peel the ginger, which you will add to taste as ginger can be spicy.
  5. After all ingredients are added to the juicer, blend until juiced and smooth.
  6. Drink juice as soon as possible to obtain all benefits of the antioxidants and nutrients. Miracle Red Juice can be absorbed more easily on an empty stomach. Drink one glass every other day or as needed.

Make it your own: Adjust the amount of ginger to your taste, and try peeling some or all of the beets and citrus if you prefer a milder flavor.
